The Institution

Birjhora Mahavidyalaya, popularly known as Birjhora Science College, is a co-educational college and was established in 1986 to fulfil the long felt need of this locality. Initially started by a sponsoring committee namely "Birjhora Mahavidyala Nirman Committee" headed by a Sri P.B. Chaudhury,MLA, with the active support and co-oopertion from the local people and organisations,the college has subsequently been taken over by the education department of the state under deficit Grand-In-Aids system w.e.f. 1st January-1990 and The college was provincialised w.e.f December-2005. The College is one of the premier institutions for higher education in Science offering study of Degree Courses in Science recognised by UGC. The College is affiliated to Gauhati university and has been awarded with B-Grade certification by NAAC ( National Assessment and Accreditaion Council) with 80% in the criteria of teaching,Learning and Evaluation.

Location

Away from the din and noise of the town,Bongaigaon Town, and yet only fifteen minutes drive into it ,towards south, from Bongaigaon Rly. Station and Bus station. The college is surrounded by picturesque landscape and vast area to form its campus. The entire campus gets covered with lush green during the four seasons with trees all around. The campus presents a unique atmosphere and ideal educational environment for students and teachers for all round development.

Mission of the College

Youth empowerment through access to education, particularly higher education,inculcating scientific spirit and traditional human values enabling to share in purposeful societal needs.

1. To impart collegiate education in various discipline as well as emarging inter disciplinary and application oriented areas.
2. To insist for improvement of standard and quality of education to make it more relevant to manpower need.
3. To promote and advance the cause of science both in pure and applied branches.
4. To take all such other steps and measures which can make an appreciable impact on improvement of standards and quality of education.


History of a College, 22 year-young !!!

From 1986 to 2007 is a long glorious march and Birjhora Mahavidyalaya is 22 year-young! From its humble beginning in the Bongaigaon Normal school Campus to its present enviable stature of imposing infrastructure and outstanding output, the College has come a long way telling the story of achievements, growth and consolidation. B-level accreditation by the NAAC, excellent service in reaching quality education to the door steps of the less privileged section of the society, pioneering student-friendly professional courses, ever increasing relevance in empowering the poor sections of the society, - all these have combined to keep Birjhora Mahavidyalaya imposingly in focus. The College has been provincialised w.e.f December 2005.

Birjhora Mahavidyalaya was established as a Degree Science College to fulfill the long felt need of the people of western Assam with regard to access to higher education in Science faculty to develop scientific spirit among the mass to motivate the unemployed youth by introducing application oriented courses of excelence. The College came into existence on 9th June-1986 starting first official classes of B.Sc T.D.C Course recognised by UGC in the Normal School Campus on 1st September-1986. This auspicious day, 1st September of every year is observed as the foundation day of the College.

Remarkable Events in connection with the establishment of the College

16-02-1986
51 member-Excecutive Committee of the Governing Body formed with Sri. P.B. Choudhury,MLA as the President and Sri. T.K. Choudhury as the Secretary.
08-03-1986
The Excecutive committee at its 1st Meeting proposed the name of the college as
'Birjhora Mahavidyalaya'.
09-06-1986
Dr. D.P. Barua , VC of Gauhati University laid down the foundation stone of Birjhora Mahavidyalaya.
01-09-1986
B.Sc Classes were started at the Bongaigaon Normal School Campus and decided to observe this day as the foundation day of the college.
19-01-1987
Inauguration of permanent campus of Birjhora MahaVidyalaya by the then Chief Minister of Assam Sri. P.K. Mahanta.
